授業概要 This course is about helping students strengthen their English language proficiency. Oral communication is the primary focus of the course. Its target skills are speaking, listening and discussion. Students simulate pre-recorded materials from the textbook and then customize those sample conversations in pair-work activities and short speech practices.
The course meets once a week. Students spend about two hours per week for reviewing past lessons and preparing new ones. Discussions and Q&A sessions that follow individual speeches are important. They are meant to maximize the usage of the language and the interaction among students.
授業のねらい・到達目標 This course enables students to develop the ability to communicate orally and reduce reliance on written language for understanding. At the end of the first term, students will have the skills to promptly produce verbal communication and logically express basic facts about themselves.

More concretely as students of this course, you will be able to:
1) Formulate questions and to give answers in English without hesitation (A-6-1);
2) Start and hold conversation in English using appropriate language pattern and vocabulary (A-2-1);
3) Introduce oneself logically in a more detailed way and with confidence (A-2-1);
4) Catch clearly what is being said and to differentiate words with similar soundings (A-3-1);
5) Give short, yet structured speeches that have an opening, a development and a closing part (A-6-1).

この科目は文理学部のDP及びCPの2, 3, 6 に対応している。

授業の方法 (演習)
Learning activities are conducted in the form of exercises done interactively among classmates, in pairs or in small groups. Students complete the listening sections of the scheduled unit beforehand. Each new unit starts with a quick listening comprehension quiz; and the unit is completed within one class session.

A typical class day proceeds as follows:
1) A brief pair work on the basis of the short essay assignment related to the preceding unit to review its language pattern;
2) Vocabulary-building activity and brief grammar review;
3) Learning activity on the scheduled material (start of new unit of the textbook or introduction of a speechmaking technique).

Feedbacks for quizzes are done during class sessions as part of the review.
Feedbacks for speech practices are given in form of peer evaluation and individually by the instructor.
Assignments that are submitted offline, are handed back to students after being checked by the instructor.

事前に授業担当教員に許可された者については、代替措置として、Canvas LMS に配信する課題を提出する。そのほか詳しいことは状況に応じて別途指示する。
履修条件 ①英語習熟度別クラス分けテストを受け、その結果により振り分けられたクラスで履修すること。
②英語習熟度別クラス分けテスト未受験の者は、GRECで振り分けられたクラスで履修すること。振り分けられたクラス以外での履修はできません。
③「英語1」(前期)と「英語2」(後期)は同一教員による同一時限のクラスを履修すること。
④卒業に必要な外国語科目として「英語」を選択した場合、必ずこの科目を履修すること。

1 Practicing the techniques of Active Listening (A-2-1) (A-6-1)
Students are introduced to the skills of active listening. They practice how to ask and answer questions in English using the full sentence style.

2 Reviewing the basic elements of English communication (A-2-1)
Students review the basic usage of ‘BE’-verb, ‘HAVE’-verb, ‘ACTION’-verb.
【事前学習】Download from Canvas LMS the PDF file titled “Basics of English Communication”; read through it and bring it to class. (1時間)
【事後学習】Prepare a self-introductory script using the sample text given in the downloaded document. (1時間)

3 Speech Practice-1 /Introducing Oneself/ (A-2-1) (A-3-1)
Students work in groups to practice introducing themselves. Speeches are followed by Q&A using the skills learned in session-1.

Students work on key expressions that are used in first meetings. Session starts with a quick quiz.

This textbook is used for the entire academic year. Half the book is completed in the Spring Semester and the remaining in the Fall Semester.

成績評価の方法及び基準 試験(20%)、レポート:Speech scripts and short essay feedback assignments(15%)、授業内テスト:In-session quick quizzes(35%)、授業参画度:Participation in class discussions(10%)、Speech practices(20%)
Test (試験) is measured by the progress reviews of sessions 8 and 15.
Report is measured by the preparation of the speech scripts, its feedbacks and essay assignments.
In-class examination (授業内テスト) is measured by the quick quizzes of sessions 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11 and 13.
Participation is measured by the active engagement in Q&A sessions.
Late submissions of assignments are not accepted.

対⾯授業に参加できない場合の条件を満たし遠隔で参加した場合、課題の提出によって評価する。
小テストや授業内試験を受けられない場合、Canvas LMSを介した課題提出によって評価する。期日については都度、Canvas LMSで告知する。
オフィスアワー Students can contact the instructor by sending an email or seeing him directly before/after a class session.
The instructor's email address is provided on the first day of the term. Students can also visit the Teachers' room during lunch time (12:30-12:55) on Saturdays.
備考 The class is fun, rewarding and stress free. Students only need to be active.
The instructor has an extensive experience of teaching English communication in Japan for over two decades.
