授業概要	Japanese visual culture has been formed through ceaseless negotiations with foreign ideas, technology, and artistic creations. The architecture comprises a great part of such visual landscape. This course surveys a variety of historical buildings in Japan, paying attention to the global context of its construction. Roughly chronologically organized, each class examines different types of major buildings. In addition, we will explore issues such as the construction of “Japan-ness” in architecture; the impact of transcultural faiths, namely Buddhism, on the architectural styles; and the ramifications of western idea of architecture in the modern time.
授業のねらい・到達目標	The course aims to familiarize students with prominent examples of Japanese architecture and its historical development in order to critically look at these artistic creations in terms of both similarities and differences with the productions of other visual cultures. この科目は文理学部（学士（文学））のディプロマポリシーDP2，DP4，DP5及びカリキュラムポリシーCP5，CP8に対応しています。
授業の方法	Each session will consist of a lecture followed by a class discussion. One or two readings will be assigned every week and they are expected to be completed before each class meeting. Students are required to submit a short reaction note about the reading and class every week. Students are supposed to spend 1 hour to complete the preparation and review of the class on each class.
履修条件	No prior knowledge is required. Students need to visit a building in the Tokyo metropolitan area for their mid-term and final presentation.
